Choosing the Right Doctor for You
When it comes to selecting your doctor, there is a lot of information available. But in the end, only you can make the decision. At the Patton Law Practice in Scottsdale, Arizona, our attorneys encourage people to gather information from many sources and then trust their own instincts about what is right for them.
Selecting a doctor is important because it's your life.
Be an informed and empowered patient.
- Talk to friends and family. What doctors do they go to? Why did they select the doctors they have?
- What is important to you? Do you want a doctor with a good bedside manner? Are certification and education in a certain area of medicine especially important to you? You may feel more comfortable with a doctor who is a certified specialist in a particular area of medicine. What is the doctor's hospital affiliation? Is it a hospital you would select?
- Search the Internet. You can find out a great deal about a doctor on the Internet. In Arizona, the Arizona Medical Board is an excellent resource. Search the medical board in your state or go to DocInfo, a national site.
- Ask questions at the doctor's office. Ask the doctor or the staff about areas of specialty. This process will also give you a good idea about how patients are treated at that office and how their questions are handled.
- Make sure you feel comfortable. This is your life. You will be entrusting this doctor and this staff with intimate and important details about yourself. Trust your own instincts about the doctor and the office. If you have a bad experience with a doctor, you can file a complaint and find a new doctor.
